By Any Name: A Tiny Archive of Critical Viewpoints on The New School
This collection of responses by members of The New School community reflects on The New School’s 90th anniversary at a time when the university contends with a highly publicized period of internal criticism and activism. The voices assembled in this publication examine the school’s legacy of progressive pedagogy and institutional policy, and ask that it remain a catalyst for social transformation in the future.
With contributions by Nicholas Allanach, Margaret Boe Birns, Julia Foulkes, Guy Greenberg, John Halsey, Gustav Peebles, Jed Perl, Timothy Quigley, Joseph Salvatore, Wendy Scheir, and Jeanne Swadosh, with survey responses by New School students, faculty, and staff.
Published on occasion of By Any Name: Institutional Memory at The New School, an exhibition with events, lectures, workshops, seances, and panel discussions, presented at The New School from October 19 to 24, 2009.
For more information on the history of The New School, The New School History is an active research project and blog compiled by, among others, New School students and edited by professors Julia Foulkes, Associate Professor of History, and Mark Larrimore, Associate Professor of Religious Studies.
