On Conditions and Conditionality: Ecological Injustices and the Biopolitics of Resistance
Apr 2, 2022
4:00–6:00pm ET
Annex, Level C, Brooklyn Army Terminal, 80 58th St, Brooklyn, NY 11220
Adelita Husni Bey is joined by poet and essayist Kay Gabriel and philosopher Romy Opperman for a discussion and participatory group activity inside her exhibition and pedagogical film set, These Conditions, on view at the Brooklyn Army Terminal Annex.
Gabriel addresses some of the mutual aid organizing forms that proliferated in the early months of the pandemic, linking these to the distinctive methods of ACT UP and the history of oppositional organizing during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 90s.
Opperman explores the relevance of radical eco-philosophy for understanding the implications of the current conjuncture, examining the limitations of the concepts of justice that still dominate liberal political theory and center-left political discourse.
Their discussion will be followed by a group activity in which audience members will work together to redefine specific keywords from the exhibition.
This event is presented in collaboration with the Contemporary Aesthetics Research Collaborative (CARC), a working group based out of the Department of Arts and Arts Professions at NYU, and composed of local artists, researchers, activists, and culture workers. Adelita Husni Bey’s These Conditions is a 2020–2022 Vera List Center Fellowship-commissioned project and has been supported by research assistance, production grants, and curatorial support by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics as part of its As for Protocols focus theme.
