Saturday, March 5, 2PM – 4PM: Movement-based Famiy Workshop with Adelita Husni Bey
Saturday, April 2, 12PM – 2PM: Storytelling Family Workshop with WonderSpark Puppets

The Vera List Center for Art and Politics invites you to a series of three family workshops held at the Annex, Brooklyn Army Terminal as part of These Conditions, an exhibition and pedagogical film set by artist Adelita Husni Bey. These workshops with young children complement a weekly workshop series Husni Bey hosts as part of her installation with a group of individuals who have had to work in person during the pandemic as well as students to reflect on their experience and develop characters, scenes, and performative sketches that express the relationship between pandemics and social change. Husni Bey will lead children and their caretakers through a workshop exploring theater props on Saturday, February, 19, and a movement-based workshop Saturday, March 5. The props ideas and designs developed by the children and recording of the movement-based workshops may become part of Husni Bey’s forthcoming experimental film, documenting her installation and pedagogical activities. The third family workshop on April 2 is led by WonderSpark Puppets

The workshops will take place in person within the installation and participants will need to register in advance. Limited to 10 families.

Saturday, February 19: Family Prop-making Workshop with Adelita Husni Bey
2–4PM, 90-minute workshop
Ages 6–12, RSVP required
Children and their caretakers are guided through drawing and craft exercises to develop props and prop ideas for the film. Designs and props developed in the workshop may be used by professional prop makers to be integrated in the final film. Materials will be provided. Participants will be required to sign a media release form.

Saturday, March 5: Movement-based Kids Workshop with Adelita Husni Bey
2–4PM, 90-minute workshop
Ages 6–12, RSVP required
Husni Bey leads children through a performative movement-based workshop inspired by the retelling of a narrative from 1349 where animals were seen roaming free after there were no more farmers to look after them. Please note that some activities from this workshop will be recorded and will become part of Husni Bey’s film. Participants will be required to sign a media release form.

Saturday, April 2: Family Workshop with WonderSpark Puppets
12–2PM, 90-minute workshop
Ages 6–12, RSVP required

WonderSpark Puppets leads the third and final Family Saturday at Brooklyn Army Terminal. Presented in the context of VLC Fellow Adelita Husni Bey’s exhibition and pedagogical film set These Conditions, artist Christina Rodriguez teaches children how to create their own puppets, integrating storytelling and listening skills related to the themes of the installation.

For all activities which involve participation in the film, children may be credited with their parent’s consent. Please reach out vlc@newschool.edu with questions.

Adelita Husni Bey’s These Conditions is a 2020–2022 Vera List Center Fellowship-commissioned project and has been supported by research assistance, production grants, and curatorial support by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics as part of its As for Protocols focus theme.
