Fellow, VLC Prize Council

Joshua Simon

Fellow, 2011-2013

Joshua Simon is a curator, filmmaker and writer living in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, whose fellowship is part of the Thingness cycle of VLC programs.

Programs + Projects
Towards Neomaterialism: Barricades vs. Shipping Containers, Neomaterialism: On the Subjectivity and Vitality of Things, and United States of Palestine-Israel: Here and Elsewhere.

During his fellowship term, Simon investigated the object through various “stagings”—the auction, the experiment, the tag, the classified advertisement, the forwarded message—in order to examine historical and contemporary notions of the object as commodity.

Recent curatorial projects include ReCoCo – Life Under Representational Regimes (co-curated with Siri Peyer, White Space, Zurich and Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna, 2011), The Unreadymade (FormContent, London, 2010), Internazionale! (Left Bank, Israeli Communist Party Culture Club, Tel Aviv, 2008), and Come to Israel, It’s Hot and Wet and We Have The Humus! (Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York, 2008).

Simon was, until recently, director and chief curator at MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam (2012-2017). He is the co-founding editor of the Tel Aviv- Jaffa based Maayan publishing, and was a 2011-2013 Fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics and a 2017 fellow at the Akademie de Künste der Welt, Cologne. Author of Neomaterialism (Sternberg Press, 2013), and editor of United States of Palestine-Israel (Sternberg Press, 2011), Ruti Sela: For The Record (Archive Books, 2015), and Communists Anonymous (with Ingo Niermann, Sternberg Press, 2017). Recent curatorial projects include Factory Fetish (Westspace, Melbourne, with Liang Luscombe),  Roee Rosen: Group Exhibition (Tel Aviv Museum of Art, with Gilad Melzer), The Kids Want Communism (MoBY and Kunstraum Kreuzberg Bethanien, Berlin, 2016-2017), and Second Nature (International Photography Festival, Tel Aviv, 2017). Simon holds a PhD from Goldsmiths College, University of London.
