The Vera List Center for Art and Politics is a research center and a public forum for art, culture, and politics.

Opportunities for Artists

The Vera List Center supports and works with artists through a range of initiatives.

The VLC Fellowship Program commissions, develops, and presents ambitious art and research projects by national and international emerging and mid-career artists, writers, scholars, and activists. Since 1994, the VLC Fellowship program has supported outstanding individuals at key moments in early- and mid-career, especially those who are members of underrepresented communities in the art world and those who would otherwise struggle to find support because of the experimental, political, and/or research-intensive nature of their practice. The appointments provide the VLC Fellows with the opportunity to draw from the curatorial, academic, and professional resources of the Vera List Center and The New School. As commissions, the resulting fellowship projects will be presented to the public through the Vera List Center’s interdisciplinary public programs and institutional networks. Learn more about the Fellowship Program on our website.

VLC Fellowships unfold within the center’s Focus Themes—two-year research cycles into a topic of particular urgency. Open calls are announced through the VLC newsletter, social media, and other external platforms.

Our 2025–2027 Open Call has been reenvisioned into two rounds designed to welcome ideas and project proposals that find support and advance across a range of VLC’s programs and initiatives, including our Fellowship Program. To learn more about the application process and timeline, visit our 2025–2027 Open Call page.

Student Opportunities

Student positions at the Vera List Center offer insight into the curatorial, organizational, and financial work and resources that go into presenting public conversations with artists and art workers on pressing political issues, including its public programs, publications, exhibitions, fellowships, and prize cycles. Students learn about the interdisciplinary contributions of the VLC to New York City’s cultural communities and engage with the Center’s efforts to diversify its programs and make them broadly accessible. The positions are open to undergraduate and graduate students in any program at The New School who are passionate about the arts and how they intersect with current political issues, as well as artistic strategies to advance social justice.

Enrolled New School students can apply to Student Assistant positions. Students with Federal Work Study are welcome to apply. Positions typically run one academic year with the possibility of extension.
