Rirkrit Tiravanija’s wide ranging body of work has challenged ideas of traditional exhibition space, allowing for innovative exchanges between art, artist and spectator. He uses strategies of hospitality and dialogue to transform galleries and museums into social spaces. Rikrit has staged gatherings that include cooking and serving meals, replicating his apartment and creating art centers for children. These interventions have blurred the boundaries between art and contemporary culture and collapsed the distinctions between art and the public sphere. Recently, Rikrit worked with curators Mollie Nesbit and Hans-Ulrich Obrist on “Utopia Station” at the 50th Venice Biennale. This exhibition included film, installation, performances, and seminars. He discusses his previous work, up to and including “Utopia Project” and “The Land,” a work he engaged with other Thai artists in an area near Shang Mai.
