Petronio and Lemon Face to Face

Oct 9–Oct 16, 2002

6:00–8:00pm ET

The Joyce Theater

Two of the most innovative contemporary American dance artists meet face to face. Stephen Petronio, who works in raw abstract movement, was in residence at the Joyce choreographing his newest work, City of Twist. Ralph Lemon, a choreographer originally schooled in the visual arts, is currently at work on Geography III, the final piece of trilogy. Lemon has abandoned the traditional dance company format for his Trilogy, an exploration on how race, politics, and culture intersect, clash, and inform aesthetics. Petronio invited Lemon into his rehearsals, and the two have since been in dialogue about the times in which we live and the challenges and risks of life in general and art in particular. They open this dialogue to the wider community in a conversation that sets the stage for a performance of City of Twist. The Joyce Theater is on Eighth Avenue (at 19th Street). Presented by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics in association with Joyce Theater.
